• The average smoker is absent 1.6 days more per year than a non-smoker. Since regular exercise programs are linked to the cessation of smoking the benefits are obvious.
• The average decline in absenteeism of persons on exercise programs is 39%.
• One day of absenteeism costs more than just one days pay. A reasonable estimate is a days pay multiplied by a factor of 1.75. This number takes into account various direct costs of absenteeism including, compensation for the time not worked; costs of replacement; cost of recruiting and training others to fill in; cost of routine overstaffing; value of lost output when work is not made-up; lower output and/or productivity due to disruptions and inexperience of replacements; costs of keeping records and so on.
• Lost work hours due to premature death and bereavement.

EXAMPLE: If your company employed 50 employees and the average employee salary is $100/day and you reduced your absenteeism by just one (1) day your savings would be as follows; $100 x 1.75 = $175 x50 (employees) = $8,750 lost. The estimated cost of an employee fitness program being implemented for 50 employees is $3,000 giving the company a net savings of $5,750.

• If a fitness program prevents just one heart attack of a key staff member, that alone would more than cover the costs of the program.
• The connection between fitness and health is undeniable.
• A company of healthy people is a healthy company.
